What is Lightyear?
Lightyear is a modern investment platform for UK and European investors, offering low-cost access to global stocks, ETFs, and money market savings. Launched in 2021, it operates in the UK and 25 EU countries through two regulated entities: Lightyear U.K. Ltd for UK customers and Lightyear Europe AS for the EU.
It is younger than established rivals, but after extensive testing I found it delivers one of the best app experiences of any broker I have used, with a fee structure that undercuts most competitors.

What I found during my testing
Testing Lightyear across both mobile and web, the first thing that stands out is the interface. It is exceptionally intuitive, and the synchronization between app and desktop is seamless: every feature works on both versions without limitations.
The multi-currency account supports GBP, USD, and EUR, which eliminates double conversion fees on trades. Portfolio transfers work in both directions, with well-documented manual and automated options depending on your existing broker.
The AI features added throughout the app are genuinely useful rather than gimmicky: real-time "Why did it move" explanations for price changes, market insights, and portfolio analysis. New in 2026, AI can also help you build a Plan: describe a theme in plain language, such as European defence or clean energy, and the app suggests a starting list of matching stocks and funds.

Lightyear's fees
Lightyear's fee structure stands out for transparency and competitiveness.
*Free of execution fees; fund manager fees apply. Currency conversion is charged at the live interbank rate.
The UK's 0.1% FX rate is among the lowest in the industry. The EU's 0.35% still beats most traditional banks charging 1% to 2%. For funding, I recommend bank transfers over card deposits to maximize your invested capital.
Fractional shares are available for both stocks and ETFs, so you can build positions in expensive names like Amazon or Alphabet with any amount. Recurring investments support dollar-cost averaging, which I found particularly effective for long-term wealth building.
Plans: organize and automate your investing
Plans let you group investments into goal-based mini-portfolios inside your account: retirement, a house deposit, children's savings, or thematic groupings by sector or geography.
The capabilities that stood out in my testing:
- Automated recurring investments. Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly contributions via standing order or from your Lightyear cash balance.
- Flexible allocations. Assign percentage weightings to each holding, funds distribute automatically when you contribute.
- Organization without extra accounts. Each Plan works as a mini-portfolio within your main account, at no additional cost beyond standard trading fees.
Plans are available in GIA accounts for UK and EU customers, business accounts, Estonian Investeerimiskonto, and Hungarian TBSZ accounts. Since February 2026 they also work inside the UK Stocks and Shares ISA, including the Ready-made Plans below.

Ready-made Plans
In 2026 Lightyear added three diversified portfolios built from low-cost BlackRock and Vanguard funds, for investors who would rather not build their own:
- Moderate Mix. A balanced portfolio of international stocks and bonds, managed to a moderate risk profile.
- Growth Group. Weighted further towards equities for a higher-risk, higher-growth profile.
- All-World Wonder. A fully invested equity portfolio passively tracking the FTSE All-World index of 3,700+ companies across 45+ countries.
For UK investors, Ready-made Plans can be held inside the Stocks and Shares ISA, so returns grow free of UK tax within the wrapper. ISA rules apply and Lightyear does not provide tax advice. The value of investments can fall as well as rise.
Savings Vaults: interest through BlackRock Money Market Funds
Savings Vaults invest your cash in AAA-rated BlackRock Money Market Funds, with rates benchmarked to central bank rates that typically rank among the most competitive in the market.
- Rates close to or above central bank base rates
- Interest accrued daily, paid monthly
- Same or next-day liquidity
- Available in GBP, USD, and EUR
- Vault fees of 0.20% to 0.25% depending on currency
Note that Savings is an investment product, not a bank account. Capital is at risk, though money market funds are designed for stability and liquidity.
Crypto: new for EU investors
Available in the EU only, not in the UK or Hungary.
In May 2026, Lightyear added direct crypto to its EU app. EU investors can buy and sell 12 of the most-traded cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP, in EUR or USD, alongside their stocks, ETFs, and Vaults. There is a single flat fee of 0.45% per order with no spread markup, and orders are routed via Kraken.
It is a useful addition for anyone who wants one home for their whole portfolio, though limited at launch: no withdrawals to external wallets, no staking or yield, and a selection capped at 12 coins. Crypto sits under Lightyear's MiCA licence through Lightyear Europe AS, but crypto assets are not covered by the €20,000 EU investor protection scheme.
If crypto is your primary focus, a dedicated exchange is the better tool, see our Kraken signup bonus page.
Crypto-assets are highly volatile and carry significant risks. Capital at risk, terms apply.
The UK ISA offering
Lightyear's Stocks and Shares ISA is one of the best in the market. UK investors can trade stocks and ETFs commission-free inside the wrapper (fund manager and FX fees may apply), earn interest through Savings Vaults, and shelter up to £20,000 per tax year from tax on gains and income. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances.
Is Lightyear safe?
I verified the regulatory setup during my review. UK operations run under Lightyear U.K. Ltd and EU operations under Lightyear Europe AS, each with the appropriate authorizations in their jurisdictions. Client assets are segregated from company funds, and Lightyear uses reputable custodians with transparent reporting.
Two protection details worth understanding:
- UK: FSCS protection covers up to £85,000 for client money held with banks. It does not extend to funds held in Qualifying Money Market Funds, which matters if you use Savings Vaults.
- EU: Investors are protected up to €20,000 by the Estonian Investor Protection Sectoral Fund.
No broker removes investment risk. Your capital is at risk, and returns are not guaranteed. You may receive back less than you invested.
Customer support
Response times were generally good in my testing. In-app chat handles common questions quickly, and complex queries get detailed email responses within 24 to 48 hours. The help center is comprehensive, and I particularly appreciated the automatic W-8BEN handling for reduced US withholding tax, something many competitors charge extra for or ignore entirely.
How to claim the Lightyear signup bonus
The welcome share is only released once an eligible promo code has been applied to the account, and KindredBase does not currently hold one. Here is the flow I verified myself:
- Sign Up: Download the Lightyear app or register online, and be sure to enter your promo code.
- Create Your Profile: Provide your personal details, tax information, and verify your identity.
- Fund Your Account: Add money using a bank transfer or card.
- Get Your Free Share: Receive a free fractional share worth up to £100 (for UK residents) or €100 (for EU residents).
Full terms, eligibility, and troubleshooting are on our Lightyear signup bonus page.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Best-in-class app experience and interface
- Commission-free UK stock trading (GIA and ISA)
- ETFs free of execution fees
- Industry-low 0.1% UK FX fee
- Competitive Savings Vault rates
- Excellent UK ISA offering
- Fractional shares for stocks and ETFs
- Genuinely useful AI features
- Seamless mobile and desktop sync
Cons
- Limited to stocks, ETFs, and EU-only crypto
- EU accounts cost more than UK (per-trade fees, 0.35% FX)
- Limited third-party portfolio tracker integration
- Younger than established rivals (launched 2021)
- No advanced charting or options trading
Who should consider Lightyear?
- Beginners and casual investors. The intuitive interface, AI insights, and fractional shares make starting with small amounts easy.
- Cost-conscious long-term investors. Commission-free UK trading, free ETF execution, the industry-low UK FX fee, and recurring investments support systematic wealth building.
- UK ISA investors. The commission-free ISA combined with Savings Vaults is one of the strongest ISA propositions available.
- Multi-currency investors. The GBP/USD/EUR account avoids repeated conversion fees.
Who it is not for: active traders needing advanced charting, level 2 data, options, or a wide product range. Interactive Brokers serves that segment better. Against Trading 212, the closest comparison, Trading 212 offers a wider product range while Lightyear counters with the lower UK FX fee and, in my view, the better app. Read my full Trading 212 review for the details.
One improvement I would like to see: integration with third-party portfolio trackers such as Delta for automatic synchronization, which would help investors using multiple platforms.
My verdict
Lightyear delivers on its promise of accessible, transparent investing for UK and European investors. The app experience is the best I have tested in this category, the fee structure is genuinely competitive, and features like Plans, Ready-made Plans, and Savings Vaults create compelling value for long-term investors.
The gaps are the narrow product range and the lack of tools for active traders, but for its target audience, beginners and cost-conscious long-term investors, it is one of the strongest options in Europe right now.

A final note
One thing I still feel I haven't gotten across in this article is just how good the Lightyear app and website looks. You can really tell the amount of time the Lightyear team has dedicated to making the app look this way. Investing truly feels more fulfilling when you get to do it with software that is this visually appealing.
Their design language reminds me of Revolut's which I also just love. To Lightyear: Keep the good updates coming and good job on designing your app!
